3/03 Culture and Volunteering

On this episode of Open Forum we are tacking a trend that has been part of American life for centuries... Volunteering. America has a rich history of people coming together and lending a helping hand when needed. Volunteering can be traced back to the  colonial days. United States citizens have used it over the years as a way to help one another in times of war, tragedy and need.

Today’s Volunteer Centers traces back to the early part of the 20th Century. From there, different kinds of volunteer centers organized, including during the Great Depression, which saw the creation of volunteer-based activities including soup kitchens and bread lines.

We'll explore how lending a helping hand effects both the volunteers and those who are in need. Learn about the impact of this generous act of kindness.... here on Open Forum.
