Ayna 48- Cambodia

This week Saim travels to Cambodia and begins his visit with a tour of the capital of Phnom Penh. The land marks there include the ornate King’s Palace and the statue in Independence Square. In the market place he browses through the many stalls offering countless varieties of exotic fruits and vegetables as well as snails, insects and worms. He drops by a school where students are taught the very graceful and beautiful form of dance known as Apsara. The journey takes a somber turn as he pays a visit to one of Cambodia’s infamous Killing Fields where tens of thousands of Cambodians were put to death during the regime of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge during the 1970’s. He views an exhibit housing the countless skulls of the victims, sites of mass graves, and a museum displaying photos of the people that were lost. A meeting with a family on their first visit back to Cambodia since the holocaust makes the experience more personal and drives home the tragedy and loss that is still felt from that period in history. Don’t miss this week’s eye-opening episode of “Ayna.”
