The Republic of Tatarstan is located inthe center of the East European plain and has a long and interesting history. This week, Saim visits the capital of Kazan and explores all that the city has to offer. Popular with tourists, a cruise down the Volga River allows passengers magnificent views of the small villages located on its banks. With a huge focus on the arts, Kazan is also home to many theaters, museums and concert halls. Exquisite architecture abounds in the religiously diverse community’s many churches, temples and mosques. Among them, the Qolsharif Mosque, the largest and most impressive in the region, caters to the largely Muslim population. Saim visits the Kazan Kremlin, a World Heritage Site, where each individual structure holds a place in the history of Tatarstan. The leaning Soyembika Tower, the most recognizable of the buildings, most likely dates back to the reign of Peter the Great.
